The biggest shift in my career was moving from senior systems engineering into product leadership.
In engineering, success meant uptime, reliability, scale. In product, it’s about alignment, strategy, and tradeoffs. But the mindset I brought with me never left: I still look at roadmaps and think in systems, dependencies, and failure points.
What changed
- I shifted from "how do we build this?" to "why are we building this?"
- I started guiding teams through uncertainty, not just solving the technical pieces
- I learned to translate deeply technical problems into business outcomes
What stayed
- Systems thinking
- Empathy for engineers
- Relentless curiosity
This dual background — engineering depth and product strategy — is still my edge.
If you’re in product, tech, or infra and made a similar jump, I’d love to hear how it changed how you lead.
